Advisors, I'm Jacob Payne, the Ed Team Lead for this year's Quiz Bowl competition at the Utah Leadership and Skills Conference for SkillsUSA. I'm super excited to facilitate the competition for your students this year. This year's competition will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, March 29th, in the LAC Arena at SLCC Redwood. I know things have been a little rocky in the past, so I want to make sure everything is clear for this year. 1. Buzzers: In the past, we have used a wireless buzzer system owned by the state. This year, to align with the national competition, we are shifting to using an internet-based system called Buzzin. With Buzzin, students will use their phones as their buzzers. Please inform your teams of this change and remind them to have their phones fully charged for the competition. To learn more about Buzzin, you can read their user guide at https://buzzin.live/BuzzIn.Live%20Guide.pdf. 2. Questions: Per the National Standards, the questions for this year's quiz bowl will cover the following categories: Approximately 30% of the questions will be professional development questions, 30% will be current world events questions, and 40% will be general academic knowledge questions. Details about what subjects can/will be covered in each category can be found in the Quiz Bowl Technical Standards below. 3. Scoring: Per the National Standards for Quiz Bowl, points will be distributed as follows: 10% for professionalism (Attire, attitude, professional attitude, etc.), 10% for the online Knowledge/Events Test, 10% for the online SkillsUSA Professionalism Test, and 70% for the in-Person Competition. If you have questions or concerns leading up to the competition, please let me know. [email protected]
